I consider this presentation relevant because it has information on all film noir conventions, mentioning both original and modern takes on the film noir style. The presentation explains the basic story of a film noir, with the main character types of the femme fatale and the anti-hero, also giving examples of some film noirs.

Film Noir; narrative

A story is being told, so what you are seeing are memories/flashbacks, and you see how the events developed from that characters perspective.

Film Noir; camera and composition

Midshots and close-ups are mainly used, and canted angles sometimes, to show what is going on and helping to understand how the character is feeling. It's also important to see who they're next to and how close they are, to understand the main characters and what will happen throughout the film.

Film Noir; mise-en-scene

Throughout the film there is high contrast used (chiaroscuro) because of the black and white, and they are usually filmed at night, and have smoke or fog to add to the mood. The characters are usualy in smart clothing, and take care of their appearance. The Femme Fatale is typical in their look, with the red lipstick and curled hair, and such features to empahsise the time on set.

Film Noir; character types

Anti-hero is a detective/reporter in this film and has been known to be a boxer making him seem like a person with slightly more strength than other people. In this film the male was not the reason of the cime happening as the femme fatale had forced the anti-hero to commit this crime therefore making this her 'fault'. The femme fatale is an independant woman, but she is very manipulative towards him. Which is how she forces this crime to happen. Throughout the film you notice how she is manipulating him gradually to do this, but in the end of the film, he clearly wants a certain revenge because of this and ends up murdering her.

Film Noir

The origins of this film were during the 1930/40's during the time of world war 2, noting that this was an older setting as the black and white effect shows this throughout the film. They use melo-dramatic sounds at certain points, which gives you a feeling towards characters and the mood, making you feel on edge. The music sounds for this film was classical range, which fits well with the time that this movie was set.
